Comments on Soapstone Connector Project Public Meeting

On Oct. 26, 2015, the Fairfax County Department of Transportation (FCDOT) hosted a public information meeting on the Soapstone Connector Project. Its purpose was to update residents on the project.

Former RCA board member and Reston 20/20 member Dick Rogers attended the meeting and gave this analysis:
The public meeting last night was largely a placeholder. It marks the beginning of the environmental review and data gathering phase. There will be another public meeting in the Spring.
As you probably know, the basic route was determined some time ago by FCDOT.  From Soapstone/Sunrise Valley to just east of Plaza America and Sunset Hills.
There is a slight alternative up for determination on the North side moving the route slightly east through the pipeline area.
Lawyers and property reps were out in force as they try to assess or influence the routing.
The concerns raised  by the Reston public largely involved the limited scope of the study area. It ends at Sunset on the North and Sunrise on the South (one of the issues raised in our 20/20 paper 2-3 years ago!). Residents along Soapstone and further south were concerned about the environmental, water flow  and traffic impact on them.
And surprisingly on the maps displayed there is no connection between the bike lanes on the crossing and the  W&OD trail (apparently the Dominion Power site is an issue). Bruce Wright and I raised this.

More information on the project available at fairfaxcounty.gov/fcdot/soapstoneconnector.htm. The public can submit comments on the project until Nov. 6, 2015.
