Northern Virginia is lucky - weather wise. For the most part we do not have to deal with floods, landslides, tornadoes and severe hurricanes. As such, we may be a bit lax on being prepared for a natural or other disaster, but we should do some planning.  Remember the Derecho event in 2012?

Fairfax County has received a grant from the U.S. Department of Homeland Security and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) to enhance community resiliency. Volunteer Fairfax is calling on organizations - both large and small - to join this effort which could be so helpful in recovery after a disaster.

Last month Connie Hartke attended an introductory meeting of this "Community Resiliency Group." Its mission is "to create a local network to support each other and strengthen the whole community by coordinating our capabilities and resources to better prepare, respond, and recover from emergencies."

If your organization would like to learn more, attend the next event on February 9. Details and RSVP here and in copy of email below.

Hello Connie Hartke,

Thank you for participating in the Hunter Mill Community Resiliency Group Seminar on January 10! It was a huge success with over 80 individuals in attendance including Supervisors Hudgins and Foust.

We hope that you will be able to join us for the next piece in the Hunter Mill resiliency effort – the Table Top Exercise. This event will take place on Thursday, February 9 at Heritage Fellowship Church from 6:00pm to 8:30pm. At the Table Top Exercise (TTX), we will practice what we learned at the Seminar and identify ways to strengthen our resiliency efforts through a “winter event situation” designed by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) National Exercise Program (NEP).

Like the Seminar, the Exercise is free of charge and, of course, we offer a catered dinner!

Register for the Hunter Mill District Tabletop Exercise on Thursday, February 9 from 6pm to 8:30pm by clicking here

If you have any questions regarding this initiative, we would be happy to speak with you further to provide more information regarding the importance of your organization’s participation in the Fairfax County Community Collaboration for Disaster Resiliency Program. Contact us at
